Big, expensive, shiny lorries do it for me the same way a Ferrari will do it for someone else. I spent a lot of time art directing vehicle photoshoots and always enjoyed the process, come rain or shine. The driver was always happy to take me out for a spin and that, I can tell you, is quite a bit more exciting than you might think. You are literally a road god in one of those things.

A green brochure designed to reflect the measures put in place by Scania to help alleviate climate change. Art direction of all photography including cover shot.

This was a really nice brochure to be involved with. Lots of photography with families and children walking through the woods, around lakes, along the coast and through beautiful gardens. It was one of the most relaxing and rejuvinating weeks I've ever spent as a designer.

A series of MFP (multi-function printer) product leaflets aimed at different market sectors.

This is everyday fare and I enjoy it just as much as something more artistic. I kind of like interjecting my more creative work with this type of project, it makes me change my mindset on a constant basis. I rather like the shapes going on here – making thngs a little more interesting than the usual product fact sheet.

Two different approaches to illustrate white paper journals aimed specifically at the UK Data Centre Sector. Other topics covered include Telecomms Security, EPR Marketing, Media Streaming and Data Analytics.

OK, not the most exciting projects to put together but they are a necessity and necessity helps pay the bills. I would have trusted heavy-weight, prog-rock hitter Hawkwind to help me work through these.

The brief: to design and produce a 36pp medical catalogue highlighting cameras, monitors, scanners and IP imaging platforms. Content comprised photographs, illustrations, line art and copy.

I find these type of medical catalogues endlessley fascinating. Some of the instruments can measure all manners of things to the nearest atom (well, sort of). How on earth is that possible? Mind-boggling.

A selection of monthly dealer newsletters, featuring new products, dealer incentives and services.

Bright and informative, I loved putting these dealer newsletters together. Any subject matter can be creative if you have the right attitude.

A 56pp Sustainability Report for Shell UK and typical of the type of document I would create for them throughout my tenure. Other examples would include Annual Report & Accounts, R&D Reports, Strategy Reports and Shareholder Reports. Digital assets for web and social meida as required.

I worked up in London putting this together. The office was like nothing I'd ever seen. They had more famous art on the walls than the National Gallery, and furniture that cost more than my house. And everything was perfect, including the people – fortunately I managed to bring everything down a couple of notches to the realms of ordinary...

Fact sheets are a fact of life and someone has to do them. Actually, I really quite enjoy them. There's usually about a bazillion words to fit on the reverse, but that's all part of the fun.

A number of business and academic publications for the world leader in global cement news and technology.

Cement is very big news. Without the stuff absolutely nothing gets built – it affects everything in the building chain. And it's far from dull – there's a lot of very interesting technologies out there. They industry is the single biggest user of used vehicle tyres which are used to power their kilns. Who knew?

The brief: to design and produce a 32pp product catalogue highlighting a large selection of projectors covering B2B, B2C and educational sectors. Content comprised photographs, illustrations, line art and text. Art direction of cover image.

I remember we had a faulty projector when photoshooting the cover and inside. It burst into flames half way through the day and we had to unceremoniously launch it out the front door into a small pond. I think it's still in there.

More product fact sheets – if nothing else it shows I'm happy getting my hands 'dirty' at the other end of the creative scale.

The brief: to design a 36pp product catalogue featuring next-generation large-bore diesel engines, marine propulsion systems and power plant applications. Content included line art, photography, illustration and copy. Art directed night-time photography in Aberdeen.

Because the shoot was at night the client had arranged for myself and the photographer to stay overnight on the ship. I don't think either of us was over excited. How wrong can you be? The passenger quarters were supremely well equiped and the food was simply superb. We were given a tour of the bridge and the engine room which quite made my day.

A series of monthly 32pp magazines reporting on technologies, applications and developments in the world of fuels and powers.

The publisher arranged for me to have a 'tour' inside one of the wind-turbines up in Yorkshire. The crew kitted me out and I got to climb to the very top of the motor housing (about 300 feet) but declined to walk on top of it. In case you hadn't noticed those blades are absolutely flippin' enormous.

The brief: to design and produce a 36pp medical catalogue highlighting anesthetic delivery, cardiology, MRI & X-ray scanners, ultrasound and maternal infant care. Content comprised photographs, illustrations, line art and copy.

Some really amazing equipment in here, especially the scanners, which look like they belong in the sick bay of the Starship Enterprise.

Who would have known there were so many products to inflict so much pain inside your mouth? And yet here they all are on display. It's almost obscene.

84pp Annual Report & Accounts document. Other projects for BAE included Quality Reports, R&D Reports, Data Sheets, Product Brochures, Case Studies, Technical Reports, digital assets for social media and web etc.

One side benefit working for BAE Systems was that occassionaly I got to have a peak at some ever so 'slightly secret' hardware over at Farnborough. Not that I could understand any of it.
